No matter how hard you try, you still get split ends. It’s frustrating. You spend a lot of time cleaning and styling your hair, so split ends are a huge disappointment after all of your labors. The truth is that split ends are almost impossible to get rid of without a serious, repeated cutting … and who wants to do that? The other truth is that split ends aren’t very well understood. If you think about how to get rid of split ends without cutting your hair, you just need to know about their origins and how to treat them once they spring up.
Split ends are not the most well known of all health and beauty afflictions. The split ends meaning or “trichoptilosis” is when the actual hair fiber splits. The thing is that this split can happen not just at the end of the natural hair strand, but in its middle or even in multiple locations.
Split ends can arise from a lot of varied sources:
- Towel drying one’s hair too rigorously
- Too many hair treatments like hair dying and perms
- Using heavy hair drying agents
- Using hot water to wash your hair
- Regularly using heat tools to hair like curlers and hair irons
What’s more, there are actual names for the different splits:
- Split—two pronged split
- Triple—multiple pronged split
- Feather—Multiple pronged split
- Incomplete—circular split in the middle of a hair fiber
- Deep—Split at the root of the hair
Not much of this terminology will likely be of daily interest to you, but thinking about how to get rid of split ends without cutting your hair means thinking about the splits themselves and what you can do to reduce the occurrences of hair splits with better daily habits (see below).
How to Treat Split Ends and Damaged Hair
Now that you know a bit more about split ends, it’s time to investigate treatments of how to get rid of split ends. Here are some easy ones:
A crushed up avocado mixed with an egg plus a spoonful of olive oil can create a conditioner-like, rehydrating mask that you can set for 10 to 20 minutes in one’s hair with a bit of warm water. This is a good method to get rid of split ends and frizzy hair.
Like the avocado mask, eggs are a good way to strengthen and replenish hair. The egg mask, made from two egg yolks mixed with one tablespoon of honey plus three tablespoons of olive oil, can be applied to the roots of the hair and left for half an hour before you wash it out with very mild shampoo and cold water.
Coconut Oil for Split Ends
Coconut products are very popular these days in the beauty world and for good reason. You need about a quarter handful of coconut oil that you work into your hair once it’s been shampooed and towel-dried. Once it’s in and wrapped in a towel, leave it for a half an hour. Then you just have to rinse it and then shampoo it twice.
