Mad Max Fury Road star Zoe Kravitz has been making big waves on Instagram and other social media sites these past few days by drastically changing up her look. On Sunday, Oct. 23, she posted a selfie showcasing her new blonde bob coupled with a fierce expression that would make Tyra Banks jealous. Captioning the photo “blond like Frank” in reference to Frank Ocean’s new album entitled Blonde, the sultry actress pouted her lips and stood in front of a gray and white smoky decaled wall for added contrast.
She credited celebrity hairstylist Daniel Moon, whose Instagram handle is @majormoonn, for her awesome new hair color. The same night she posted that picture on Instagram, the 27-year-old actress and daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, was sporting a somewhat different hairstyle at Drake’s 30th birthday party in Los Angeles. She still had the blonde hair, but this time it was lot longer and braided midway down and then it flowed into blonde waves. As naturally beautiful as Zoe Kravitz is (just look at who her parents are), her new blonde hair transformation has received mixed reviews from fans on social media. Two of her Instagram followers did not mince words at all. One commenter blatantly said, “I hate it,” and another commented that “she’s gonna have to shave her head soon”
But that is no skin off of Zoe Kravtiz’s back because she is still just being herself and does not seem to care what people think of her new hair color or hairstyle. Some have even questioned why she did it, reminding Zoe that in the past she heralded how much pride she had in her natural hair color and how natural hair should be a major point of pride for all women of color.
In a 2015 interview with California Style, she even went so far as to assert that, “You see blond girls with the same hair in every movie,” a statement that has understandably been met with some criticism now that she has dyed her own hair blonde. Even though Zoe Kravitz has also stated that she was never trying to make a social statement by sporting long dark dreadlocks in the past, she did acknowledge the importance of people recognizing their own cultural roots and exhibiting them unabashedly in the face of abject disparagement.
As a strong role model for young women of all races and an advocate for independence and self reliance, Zoe Kravitz is simply showing off her own personal style. Even if not everyone is a fan of her new hair dye job, there are still those loyal fans who complimented the Dope actress without hesitation, stating, “It looks so awesome on light skin mixed complexions.” No matter who you are, there will always be people judging you for everything you do—especially if you are a celebrity. The best thing to do is to ignore the constant scrutiny and just do whatever makes you happy.
