Natural Ways to Exfoliate Your Skin at Home

It’s imperative to exfoliate your face properly in order to get rid of all the dead skin and to allow your new skin to breathe. How often you should exfoliate your face depends on your skin type and environmental factors, but generally once a week is a happy medium—you want to shed those dead skin cells on a regular basis, but must be careful to not over-exfoliate your skin, and leave your skin raw and exposed to the elements.

Exfoliation is an important part of skincare and everyone should be aware of how to exfoliate their face.  Store-brought exfoliators can get a little pricey, but luckily, there are a number of household items that can be used in lieu of those expensive exfoliating face washes. You might be surprised to learn that much of what you have in your kitchen cupboard can be used to naturally exfoliate your face.

How to Exfoliate Your Face: At Home Remedies

An avocado, honey, and sugar mask. The avocado and honey in this mask offer nourishing properties while the sugar allows you to scrub off dead skin. Mash up one avocado and combine it with two tablespoons of honey and one tablespoon of sugar. Allow the mask to sit on your face for 15–20 minutes before washing it off by gently massaging.

Healthy oil and sugar. Here’s how to exfoliate you face with sugar: Mix two tablespoons of oil with one tablespoon of sugar and use a washcloth to apply the mixture to your face, gently massaging it in.

There are a variety of oils that you can choose from when creating this scrub at home. If you want to tighten and rejuvenate your skin, then you’ll want to choose a nut-based oil that’s rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Healthy oils that you can use in this recipe include coconut, almond, olive, tea tree, grapeseed, argan, jojoba, black currant, chamomile, or rose hip oil.

Cornmeal or nutmeal-based scrub. Combine three tablespoons of cornmeal or another type of ground nutmeal with a small amount of water to create a thick paste. Apply a generous amount to your face and let it soak in for about 15 minutes before using warm water to massage it off.

Coffee scrub. WikiHow says,

“The rough texture of coffee combined with the caffeic acid it contains makes it a great candidate for natural exfoliation. Caffeic acid has anti-inflammatory properties and helps increase collagen production, leaving your skin smooth and healthy.”

To make this homemade exfoliant, mix one tablespoon of freshly ground coffee (not instant– it’ll dissolve) into one tablespoon of water or olive oil. Allow the mask to sit on your skin before scrubbing it off. You can may also choose to steam your face before applying this, or any of the masks listed, to open up your pores and allow for a deeper clean.

Oatmeal scrub. This is a great option for those with dry skin as it nourishes your skin while exfoliating. Mix two tablespoons of ground oatmeal (not instant) with one teaspoon of salt or sugar and one tablespoon of water and oil. After allowing the mixture to soak into your skin for 15 minutes, massage gently and rinse with warm water.
