It can be tough to keep up with all the new trends and releases in the beauty world, especially if you’re not a dedicated makeup lover with tons of time to browse the net and get lost in the abyss of beauty related videos on YouTube. Lucky for you, we’ve done all the work for you. If you’re out of the loop when it comes to makeup application techniques (a.k.a. if you’re still using the same flat foundation brush your mom did) we’re here to update you on the latest and greatest methods. From oval makeup brush sets, to makeup sponges and makeup blenders, we’ve covered it all.
Oval-Shapes Makeup Brushes
Resembling hairbrushes, these tools were designed to apply makeup on yourself, rather than other people. Oval makeup brushes are impossibly soft and are more sanitary than traditional brushes—not to mention that they offer a beautiful makeup application and finish. Celebrity makeup artist Julianne Kay told E! News that “The brushes have three to 10 times the amount of individual fibers as conventional brushes, which makes the application almost magnetic.” Her personal favorite oval makeup brush set is offered by the Artis brand. These sets can run you just over $300, which might be above the budget for some beauty lovers. If that’s the case, you can find a ton of off-brand, much cheaper options on Amazon.
If you’re still on the fence about whether or not to give these brushes a try, check out this review and demo from YouTuber Jackie Aina:
If you’re even remotely into makeup, you must’ve heard about the BeautyBlender by now. It’s one of the most popular (and arguably best) makeup sponges out there. Shaped like an egg, this little tool comes in a variety of colors, and even a miniature version that’s about the size of an almond. When you wet this sponge it just about doubles in size, and will give your Christmas party look an airbrushed finish. You can use it with liquid, cream and powder products. The BeautyBlender can be found at Sephora for about $20—seem like a lot for a little sponge? Keep in mind that it can be used to apply a variety of products, so it can eliminate more than one brush in your beauty routine. Still not sold? Real Techniques offers a similar sponge that can be bought in a pack of 2 for less than $15.00.
Automatic Makeup Applicators
The latest in beauty trends are automatic makeup applicators that do all the work for you! Tools like the Sephora Collection Sonic Airbrush Sponge take the guesswork out of blending, and make sure your foundation has a seamless finish every time. Best Beauty Products says that “this battery operated vibrating brush comes equipped with a replaceable sponge head that gently pats the skin 12,000 times per minute in order to evenly distribute and blend cream products.” Okay, we know that blending is important, but 12,000 pats per minute? There’s no way you could match the blending power of this little tool on your own!
