Sun care is always a hot topic—no pun intended—in anti-aging skin care, seeing as how one of the leading causes of premature aging is sun damaged skin. Sun care is also critical for protecting against melanoma and other types of skin cancer. That’s why anti-aging skin care experts and health professionals alike are always on the lookout for new ways to help protect against UV damage.
A study published in the January 2015 issue of the journal Experimental Dermatology might have the answer they’ve been looking for. Researchers discovered that there’s an ingredient derived from a particular plant that can protect the skin from damaging effects of UV rays, which means it could have huge value in an anti-aging skincare routine. It’s an active antioxidant called Licochalcone A, which comes from the root extract of the Chinese Licorice plant. According to the study, the plant extract works to protect against sun damaged skin by proving a protective shield and helping to strengthen the skin’s own natural defense systems.
To test the effects of Licochalcone A against sun damaged skin, researchers used a light simulating UV exposure on isolated human skin cells. They found that the skin cells that had been treated with the antioxidant produced higher levels of “self-protecting” molecules and, as a result, fewer harmful radicals were detected. Then they tested the sun care treatment on real people. Participants applied a lotion containing a Licochalcone A extract on their forearm for two weeks and it was shown to still protect against UV damage.
This could very well be a breakthrough in the study of anti-aging skin care and the prevention of sun damaged skin. As the researchers point out, many sunscreens only offer surface protection, which at least 2% of UV rays can still penetrate through and cause damage below the skin’s surface. “We hope that our study helps to improve the effectiveness of sunscreens to protect from the harmful aspects of sun exposure,” explained one of the lead researchers on the team.
Remember, if you want to protect your skin from fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, sun care is essential for anti-aging skin care. Sun damage happens below the skin’s surface, and no amount of high-end skin care products can change that. That’s why it’s so important to protect against sun damaged skin by wearing sunscreen every day, even when it doesn’t look sunny outside—UV rays can still penetrate through clouds. Also make sure to reapply every couple hours to ensure that you’re providing your skin with superior, all-day protection.
If you really want to look younger, you should also make sure that your anti-aging skin care routine is enforced with ingredients that are clinically proven to actually work. And we’ve got just what you need—it’s a unique line of products that contains an exclusive combination of ingredients that have been shown to reduce visible signs of aging, including minimizing the depth and appearance of wrinkles, improving skin tone, and increasing skin firmness.
