As Popeye said in his theme song, “I’m strong to the finish, ’cause I eats me spinach.”

What helps give Popeye strength is the high vitamin A content and iron contained within the superfood. Iron helps control aging, while vitamin A is a core anti-aging vitamin. Spinach also contains strong amounts of vitamins C and K, which means it should most definitely be part of your anti-aging diet. Iron also increases your metabolism, which increases energy and improves your body’s ability to burn dietary calories.

When you look youthful, it usually means your health is also up to par. Spinach is a superfood because it keeps you healthy from the inside out by fighting several common age-related diseases. The magnesium in spinach helps stabilize blood sugar levels, which keeps diabetes in check. You can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease with spinach’s folic acid (vitamin B9), which also assists against heart disease. The carotenes and 13 different flavonoids allow the superfood’s antioxidants to act as an anticancer. Furthermore, the iron in spinach is beneficial for preventing anemia, a condition characterized by a dangerously low rate of red blood cells.

People with kidney failure should consult their nephrologists before adding spinach to their anti-aging diet, as the superfood can disturb calcium metabolism.

Individuals with osteoporosis should also discuss with their health practitioner about the best way to add spinach to their anti-aging diet. Although the superfood is a great source of calcium, it’s also high in oxalates, which interfere with your bones’ ability to absorb the calcium. Osteoporosis patients can still reap the benefits of this superfood, but should combine it with other calcium sources.

Spinach is a superfood whether it’s eaten raw or cooked. But when it’s cooked, it’s better able to supply your body with antioxidants.
